PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Schools and Host Families

Our students stay with host families in the local community. Host families are paid a stipend for hosting, and Educatius International handles the screening, placement and supervision of host families before and during the program. These families have a strong desire to welcome a foreign student and help them experience their American culture.

International students who want an immersive experience love our F-1 Public School program since public schools offer them generally the highest percentage of American fellow students in the school.

All students are required to take a ELTiS-test and the minimum score for acceptance is 45. Some school districts may have additional unique requirements

The SELECT Public High School Program is for a maximum of one year. International students can transfer into a private school after they complete a year at a public school.

One of the most important parts of a study abroad high school program in the US is your host family! While all international students have many memories of their experience - their relationship with their host family is often the one they will remember the most.

For the F-1 Public High School Program all host family placements are handled directly by Educatius International staff. The host family placement is a very important part of a student's high school program and perhaps one of the most important factors for the students' well-being while on the program. At Educatius International, we therefore always do our very best to make sure we match every student with a suitable host family.

Host Family Matching and Placement

  • Educatius International will match the student with a suitable screened host family for placement, after the school district has chosen a school for the student.

  • The student application is sent to the Educatius coordinator in the area.

  • The coordinator matches the student with a family and notifies the Educatius home office.

  • Educatius notifies the student or their representative about the placement.

Host Family Screening

All Educatius International host families are screened through the following steps:

  • Each potential host family completes a in depth application form including references.

  • Educatius staff conducts a home visit and personal interview with the host family members.

  • Personal reference checks.

  • Police Checks.

  • Criteria

At Educatius International we look for families that are practically located for the student to get to school and that have the space needed for hosting a student. We look for families that want to host a student because they want to share their way of life and culture with the student at the same time as they get to learn more about the student and his/her home country. Our families come from all walks of life and may be typical mother + father + child families, or single parents, no children etc.

What you can expect from your host family:

Of course, ALL host families are different. They can range from single parents, older parents with no kids, to a mother and father with many children. Each family will have their own way of life, which can often result in a variety of types and sizes of homes. There are however certain things that can always be expected of a host

family - including providing a safe and welcoming living environment! For example:

  • A room with your own bed as well as furniture for storing your clothes and personal things

  • A single room, or a double room shared with another international student (never of the same nationality)

  • A space where you can do your homework

  • Breakfast and dinner in the home every day on school days.

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner in the home on weekends and school holidays

  • Location no further than 45 minutes away from school. This distance is often much shorter but in the big city areas 45 minutes is normal.

  • A location in a safe part of the town or city

  • Local support from your International Coordinator (IC)

*PRIVATE SCHOOL

Combine a prestigious high school education with an American Host Family experience

Educatius’ Private Day School Program offers the best possibility for international students wanting to study at a US high school to combine a high level of academic offered by private schools with the enriching experience of living with an American host family.

Most international students who attend the private day program stay for multiple years and have the intention to continue to a good university in the US. Others, however, attend our Private Day School Program for the experience of an academic school year abroad and return home for their continued studies. Some international students also start for a year and then extend for multiple years after seeing how positive the experience is for them.

Private Schools and Host Families

Our private day schools are located throughout the USA. Currently we have 75 schools in 22 states and we are adding more all the time. Some schools are located in famous US locations such as New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Washington DC, Tampa and more.  Others are located in smaller cities and towns throughout America. Most are co-ed, although we do offer a few all-boys and all-girls private schools. We have many private day schools that are non-religious, as well as some that are Catholic, Christian, Episcopalian and others. We will help you determine which private day schools are the best fit – for academics, location, sports, arts or other programs.

All our host families are carefully selected and screened by Educatius’ experienced team.  Host families come in many shapes and sizes, but we will always offer international students a safe, welcoming and supportive environment. All our host families have a strong interest in welcoming an international student to their home and sharing their American way of life. There can only be 1 or 2 international students in each home.

Each student is assigned an international coordinator who will orient them to their new community and act as a personal support for each student throughout their stay.

International coordinators:

  • Provide a welcome orientation for international students

  • Act as an advocate for the student if they have questions about the host family or school

  • Interviews and reports on the student’s progress every month – by talking to the student, school and host family

Who Can Attend Private US High Schools?

Students aged 14-18 are eligible to attend our Private Day program. Each private school has it’s own admissions requirements but all international students must have and maintain at least a passing grade point average (GPA). All new students are interviewed by their prospective schools via Skype to make sure students hold the necessary level of maturity and motivation to study abroad.

The student’s level of English should be tested prior to admissions through a ELTiS or TOEFL test. We advise that students planning to study abroad sign up for the TOEFL test in advance since it sometimes needs to be scheduled months in advance.  ESL classes are available in some schools, should students require additional language support.

Applications

Students can apply for Fall enrollments and some private schools may also accept January enrollments. The overall deadline for Fall enrollments is July 1, however many popular schools many close well before that date so we recommend completing your application early to get your first choice of schools.

We guarantee host family placements – this means that any student accepted into the program can be confident they will be placed in a welcoming American family.

Fees

The program fees vary depending on the private school that a student chooses.

Prices include:

  • High school match and placement

  • Double placement in a host family and support (Single placement can be guaranteed for an additional supplement)

  • Host family accommodation on full board basis*

  • Guardianship and supervision by Educatius officials during the program

  • Visa application documents and support

*Students are provided with breakfast, and dinner. Students may bring lunches from home to eat at school, but are otherwise responsible for buying their own school lunches if they prefer to eat from the school cafeteria.

**All students are picked up at the airport by their host family or an Educatius International representative on arrival.

Your host family is one of the most important parts of a study abroad high school program in America! International students and their American families forms bonds that last for years beyond their time in the USA.

In the F-1 Private Day School High School Program, all host family placements are handled directly by Educatius International's team of Regional Managers and International Coordinators. The host family placement is a very important part of a student's high school program and perhaps even one of the most important factors for a student's well-being during the program. We therefore always go to great lengths to provide a great fit for both the student and the family.

How Host Family Matching and Placement Works:

  • After the school district has chosen a school for the student, Educatius International will match the student with a suitable screened host family for placement.

  • The student application is sent to the Educatius coordinator in the area.

  • The coordinator matches the student with a family and notifies the Educatius home office.

  • Educatius notifies the student or their representative about the placement.

All Educatius International host families are screened through the following steps:

  • Each potential host family completes a in depth application form including references.

  • Educatius staff conducts a home visit and personal interview with the host family members.

  • Personal reference checks.

  • National Police Checks.

Hosting Criteria

We look for families who are enthusiastic about the experience!  Families who are practically located for a student to get to school and that have the space needed for hosting a student. We look for families that want to host a student because they want to share their way of life and culture with the student at the same time as they get to learn more about the student and his/her home country.

*BOARDING SCHOOLS

USA boarding schools represent the elite school system for both international and US students.  Boarding schools are usually competitive schools with selective admissions, small classes, individual attention from highly qualified faculty and staff and have outstanding facilities and programs. Educatius only works with schools that have documented high quality academics and facilities. We partner with American schools that not only offer a great education but also the best possible environment and atmosphere for study, recreational activities and life in general for students.

Where are our schools?

Most of our boarding schools are in the USA – covering regions from New England to California to Florida to the Midwest.  We also can place students in a couple boarding schools in Canada & Switzerland.

Usually, international students who choose boarding schools do so for their strong academics results and college prep programs that help students prepare for and apply to top universities in the USA and around the world. However some international students choose US boarding schools for the unique programs they offer that can’t be found in their own country.

What do they offer?

All accredited US boarding schools have excellent academics, and many offer specialty programs that vary from school to school.  These programs might be academic such as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus, Robotics, Language or Business (we have one boarding school that has the USA’s only stock trading floor at a high school).  Programs might be artistic such as a performing arts conservatory, a world-class ballet program, film making or a competitive music program. Other schools might have unique programs or facilities such as golf course or horseback riding facilities on campus, or even flying lessons for students who wish to become pilots.

Boarding schools truly provide international students with the best environment to enrich their achievements in academics, arts, sports and leadership – the accomplishments that top US & global universities are seeking.

Who can apply?

Most of our boarding schools accept students in grades 9-11.  Some of our partners accept younger students and other can consider very accomplished students with strong English skills in grade 12.  Each boarding school has its own requirements for admissions and will look at each student’s academic grades, English level and motivation individually. Schools will require a Skype or even in person interview with each applicant before considering their admission.

Some schools are highly competitive, accepting only a handful of students a year.  Some schools have excellent ESL programs for international students and therefore can accept a student with a lower level of ESL than a day school can.  With so many variations with boarding schools it can be difficult to know which school is best for each student. However our sales and support team will help each student understand which boarding schools are the best fit.

For more information, visit our list of boarding schools here.

Boarding School Application Process

We will review each student’s grade and request and recommend US boarding schools that are the best match. The student can complete our application form and apply for multiple schools.  The best time to apply for US boarding schools is January to March when schools have the greatest availability of space for fall. Although due to our great partnerships with schools we know when the have space after a deadline, however we encourage students to apply as early in the year as possible to make sure that the best boarding schools for them still have available space.

Most students start in the autumn but it may also be possible to enroll from January.

Program Fees

The tuition + boarding accommodation fee is set by each school and varies from one boarding school to another.  Usually there are additional fees for activities, tips, insurance and international student fee.

There are a number of myths surrounding boarding schools, life in the dormitories and campus food. We wrote about them in a recent article titled The 8 Myths of Boarding Schools. The reality is living on campus at a boarding school dormitory is an exciting experience for international students.

Schools take great care in providing some of the best accommodations students could ask for. In most cases, international high school students will be sharing a room with other students. Room setup can be anything from two students in one room using a common bathroom, to four students in a room with a shared bathroom. Some boarding schools also offer single rooms, but they are usually reserved for high-performing seniors.

Benefits of Living in a Dorm

Boarding school dormitories are like “all-inclusive” resorts that cater to the students’ needs. There is typically 24-hour adult supervision, providing students the chance to ask questions about homework assignments or for help during challenging times. Here are some of the reasons that students love boarding life:

  • Students get to live with friends and classmates!

  • Boarding Schools make campus life fun by offering activities after classes.

  • International students can practice their English in the dorms with friends or through school sponsored ESL classes on campus.

  • Students have access to great and healthy food options during meal times.

  • Classes are usually only walking distance away.

  • Help is always right around the corner, whether it is a classmate or an adult supervisor.

  • Some schools coordinate trips for dorm students. These off-campus trips can happen on weekends or during vacations and can be: visiting the nearby city/town for shopping or sightseeing, going to the beach, visiting the local amusement park, hiking, skiing, and more.
